Living with asthma symptom has become a common way of life for most asthma sufferers. Adult asthma obviously has the ability to affect a sufferer's way of life but the experts tell us it doesn't have to. Indeed it doesn't. Especially if the proper precautions are taken.

Asthma symptom can be brought on by a variety of triggers. Sufferers who practice good management practice techniques will live a good quality of life where asthma symptom aren't a constant worry. Did you know in the United States alone, over 17 million people are affected by asthma.

Asthma is described in many forms including allergy asthma, adult asthma; even asthma and acid reflux: with varying treatments. More recently, less mainstream treatment for asthma symptom has surfaced such as acupuncture for asthma.

Acupuncture For Asthma

China has used acupuncture treatment for centuries on different types of ailments. Acupuncture for asthma has been effective for a number of years. The World Health Organization identified acupuncture an effective treatment of up to 40 known diseases with asthma being one of them.

Acupuncture for asthma benefits such things as a reduced dependency on drugs. In the US, states have there own regulated laws relating to qualified acupuncture practitioners. Certainly if you are not getting relief from your current treatment methods then acupuncture for asthma provides another alternative.

Allergic Asthma

Allergic asthma affects over 50 per cent of asthma sufferers. It has been described as a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways.

Allergic asthma forms from an early childhood and sufferers are affected by elements such as dust, mold and pollen. The problem of course is those three factors are hard to avoid so physicians will prescribe medication to reduce the incidence of attack.

Certainly asthma is no fun to live with but it can be controlled. Within these pages at AsthmaInfoLine.com we'll provide a library of views and reviews on asthma, asthma symptoms and treatment and news relating to asthma from around the world.

Asthma is a chronic lung condition that is characterized by difficulty in breathing. People with asthma have extra sensitive or hyper-responsive airways.

During an asthma attack, the airways become irritated and react by narrowing and constructing, causing increased resistance to airflow, and obstructing the
flow of the air passages to and from the lungs.

There are two main types of medicines for the treatment of asthma:

1. Quick Relief Medicines: also called relievers, give rapid, short-term treatment and are taken when you have worsening asthma symptoms that can lead to
asthma episodes or attacks. You will feel the effects of these medicines within minutes.

2. Long-Term Control Medicines: also called preventers, are taken every day, usually over long periods of time, to control chronic symptoms and to prevent asthma episodes or attacks. You will feel the full effects of these medicines after taking them for a few weeks. People with persistent asthma need
long-term control medicines.

Drugs, such as those resembling two of our hormones, can help treat asthma. These two hormones are adrenaline (epinephrine in the USA) and hydrocortisone (a steroid).

There are also other drugs which help treat asthma. Whilst drugs can remove all your symptoms if you have mild asthma, people with more severe or long-standing asthma don't get nearly such good results, so alternate medications are required.

Adrenaline (epinephrine) is pumped into our bloodstream when we have a sudden fright or emergency. It is the quick-acting hormone from the middle of the adrenal glands near our kidneys. It makes your pulse race, makes your heart thump, and readies your body for emergency action. In asthma, the medicines which resemble adrenaline quickly relieve asthma for a short time, and are called relievers.

Hydrocortisone comes from the outer part of our adrenal glands, called the 'cortex'. It is also partly an "emergency hormone" but it works much more slowly, for much longer, and in a completely different way to adrenaline. Medicines which resemble hydrocortisone slowly allow the lining of air tubes in an asthma sufferer to become normal. As a result, your asthma becomes less severe and you are less likely to get asthma attacks. So these steroid medicines are called preventers. There are other asthma 'preventers', but the steroids are the most powerful.

Most people who have asthma should have both of these kinds of medicine – preventers and relievers.

Usually the best way to take these medicines is to breathe them in. That is, you inhale them, through your nose or mouth. The reasons you inhale them are :

because you need less of the medicine,
you won't suffer as many side effects, and,
the medicine works more quickly,

The final point is particularly important with the adrenaline-like, fast-acting relievers.

Another advantage is that the hydrocortisone-like steroid preventers you breathe in can be chosen to be biodegradable inside the body. As a result, then can
do their work in the lung, but don't get much of a chance to produce any side effects in the rest of your body, because your liver breaks them down.

Quick relief medicines are used only when needed. A type of quick relief medicine is a short-acting inhaled bronchodilator. Bronchodilators work by
relaxing the muscles that have tightened around the airways. They help open up airways quickly and ease breathing.

They are sometimes called "rescue" or "relief" medicines because they can stop an asthma attack very quickly. These medicines act quickly but their effects only last for a short period of time. You should take quick relief medicines when you first begin to feel asthma symptoms like coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath.

Anyone who has asthma should always have one of these inhalers in case of an attack. For severe attacks, your doctor may use steroids to treat the inflammation.

Long-term control medication include:

The most effective, long-term control medication for asthma is an inhaled corticosteroid because this medicine reduces the swelling of airways that makes
asthma attacks more likely. Inhaled corticosteroids (or steroids for short) are the preferred treatment for controlling mild, moderate, and severe persistent asthma. They are safe when taken as directed by your doctor. Inhaled medicines go directly into your lungs where they are needed. There are many kinds of inhalers that require different techniques, and it is important to know how to use your inhaler correctly. In some cases, steroid tablets or liquid are used for short times to bring asthma under control. The tablet or liquid form may also be used to control severe asthma.
Long-acting beta-agonists are another kind of long-term control medication. They are bronchodilators, not anti-inflammatory drugs. These medicines are
used to help control moderate and severe asthma and to prevent night-time symptoms. Long-acting beta-agonists are taken together with inhaled corticosteroid medicine.
Leukotriene modifiers (such as montelukast, zafirlukast, and zileuton) are long-term control medicines used either alone to treat mild persistent asthma or together with inhaled corticosteroids to treat moderate persistent asthma or severe persistent asthma.
Cromolyn and nedocromil are also long-term control medicines used to treat mild persistent asthma.
Theophylline is a long-term control medication used either alone to treat mild persistent asthma or together with inhaled corticosteroids to treat moderate persistent asthma. People who take theophylline should have their blood levels checked to be sure the dose is appropriate.

If you stop taking long-term control medicines, your asthma will likely worsen again.

Many people with asthma need both a short-acting bronchodilator to use when symptoms worsen and long-term daily asthma control medication to treat the
ongoing inflammation. Over time, your doctor may need to make changes in your asthma medication. You may need to increase your dose, lower your dose, or
try a combination of medications. Be sure to work with your doctor to find the best treatment for your asthma. The goal is to use the least amount of
medicine necessary to control your asthma.

At a Glance … Asthma Treatments – Relievers and Preventers

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that makes airways (bronchial tubes) particularly sensitive to irritants, and this is characterized by difficulty
in breathing.
There two main types of medicines for the treatment of asthma:

• Quick Relief Medicines: also called relievers, and,
• Long-Term Control Medicines: also called preventers.

Quick Relief Medicines give rapid, short-term treatment and are taken when you have worsening asthma symptoms that can lead to asthma episodes or attacks.

You will feel the effects of these medicines within minutes.

Long-Term Control Medicines are taken every day, usually over long periods of time, to control chronic symptoms and to prevent.

An asthma remedy is so much more than carrying an inhaler for protection and using it whenever you suspect an attack is imminent.

Controlling asthma is a combination of practices which includes taking medication however, lifestyle choices also need to be considered. If you ignore triggers which hamper your quality of life and try to continue life as normal then you're setting yourself up for trouble.

In this article, we'll give you five simple steps in controlling attacks. These are just a combination of steps you can take and while each on it's own is not the answer to your asthma remedy issues they can help considerably when used in conjunction with your asthma medication.

5 Steps To A Better Quality Of Life

- Respect Asthma and it's ability to cause you harm. Many people who have asthma refuse to respect it enough to alter their lifestyle which is dangerous and irresponsible.

- Be consistent in your control methods. Haphazard control can lead to unannounced attacks.Once you have decided on what to do and what not to do in an effort to control the symptoms of asthma, stick to those decisions.

- Approaching your control methods in a practical and positive fashion. Just because you have asthma does not mean that you have to give up all activity and sit on the couch for the rest of your life. Keep a good attitude and you will be able to rationally think about the situation and what is the best way to handle it.
- Asthma is a disease and if you have no experience in dealing with medical issues then don't attempt to come up with your own asthma remedy. Finding the right asthma remedy is best done with the help of a medical professional.

- There is no known cure for asthma yet it doesn't mean you need to accept that you will be restricted from enjoying your life because of it. Accept the fact that you that you can manage asthma, and that you can be happy and normal with asthma. Avoid letting the fact you have asthma control you.

Asthma medication has become a safety net for sufferers and there is no doubt that it has helped to save more than one life.

The value of asthma medication cannot be understated yet there is still an underlying feeling many asthmatics rely on them to much.

By this, relying on medication seems to give a false sense of security and can lead to unnecessary risks being taken. Prevention is better than cure in many cases and this also applies to asthma sufferers.

Part of managing one's asthma is preventative measures. There is no sense in continually using medication if on many occasions, problems can be avoided. This involves recognizing what triggers set off attacks in a person's life and then adjusting their lifestyle accordingly.

Asthma medication certainly has a vital role in this management process.

The Safety Net

Your asthma medication can mean the difference between life or death. So make sure you get to your doctor if you have any problems with wheezing, coughing or catching your breath, particularly when you are exercising or have just finished exercising. Avoid stepping out into cold air if it has a history of setting off attacks.

Becoming complacent can cost you big time. Sometimes feeling indestructible simply because one hasn't suffered an attack for quite some time shouldn't be a reason to start taking unacceptable risks.

Using Medication When Appropriate

Asthma is a treatable disease however, a cure is still some way off. By managing your trigger points you have gone a long way to keeping it under control. Understandably, some triggers like pollen are very difficult to avoid and this is when your asthma medication comes into it's own.

Having your medication with you at all times is imperative. You should make it the first thing you grab before leaving your home.

Combine good management practices and asthma medication and you can significantly increase your quality of life. Abusing your medication though could have serious ramifications.

I had an interesting discussion recently on asthma management in fact, the discussion became quite heated. Why? Because the point was made to me that perhaps we are going over the top with awareness programs relating to the effects and dangers of asthma.

My question was "how can you be over the top when it comes to making people continually aware about such a prevalent disease?"

Asthma management can be a chore for many sufferers but the simple fact is by ignoring good management practices a sufferer only increases the risk of having a life threatening attack. Let's examine some basic asthma management tips and techniques.

Monitor Your Breathing

Be aware of your breathing. Simple I know but devices such as peak flow meters are a terrific aid in checking breathing abnormalities. This is a device that is used to measure your best airflow for that day. Simply blow as hard as you can into the tube, and the tick mark will land on the maximum pressure. If it is below 50 percent, that is usually a sign that your breathing is abnormal and you need to better control it.

Don't Ignore Your Medication

Asthma medication was developed for a good reason; to keep attacks at bay. It's folly to ignore taking it. The medicine you take for your asthma depends on how mild or severe your asthma is.

Some doctors prescribe a simple bronchodilator to use before or during physical activity, to open your lungs. If your asthma teeters towards severe, you will have to take both a bronchodilator as well as a steroid inhaler, to help keep your lungs open once they are. Pill forms of asthma medicine are sometimes recommended to supplement the usage of inhalers.

Stay Healthy

Asthma management means living a healthy lifestyle. It's a broad statement I know but just doing some simple things may be all that's required to keep asthma attack at bay. It is important to not smoke or be around someone who does smoke, as this could be a trigger for an asthma attack. Alcohol and other drugs could also be very unhealthy for someone living with asthma. Diet, exercise and refraining as much as you can from cigarettes and alcohol can help you better manage your asthma.

So asthma mamagement basically consists of monitoring your breathing, taking your medication and living a healthy lifestyle. Once you get into the habit of performing these management techniques it becomes instinctive.

There are numerous reasons surrounding chronic cough and one of them is that it could be related to asthma symptoms. Asthma cough is a term that is probably used a little too loosely however, don't ignore the symptoms if you, or someone close to you is exhibiting persistent and chronic cough symptoms.

Of the most common symptoms of mild asthma, chronic night time cough is one of the more recognisable. It's a condition that should be taken seriously, particularly with children and medical advice is a good idea.

Asthma cough has been shown by recent findings to be caused by irritants and allergens. It worsens at night and also during exercise but with proper treatment, can be controlled. When reacting to a stimulant, the muscle found in the air passage of the lungs contracts retarding the flow of air. The inflammation leads to coughing as well as shortness of breath.

There is still a lot to learn about asthma cough and it's cause and we'll look at some of the known facts in this article.

Asthma cough is a non-productive cough. It doesn't bring up any mucus. The sound of this cough is as if something is rattling, or there’s a wheeze at the end of it. If your child is coughing up mucus or sputum, chances are that it’s not asthma cough. Most of the times, this type of cough is followed by a cold and lasts for a week or two.

If the cough is not controlled, it may continue until the child is out of breathe and choke, or sometimes even until they actually vomit.

Asthma cough is a type of dry cough caused by bronchial spasms. Research shows that asthma cough is caused by excessive immune action against irritants or allergens.
The airways swell as histamine gets produced, and the muscles around the bronchial passages go into spasm and narrows up to attempt to force the irritant up through them. This narrowing cause symptoms like shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, and coughing.

This disease is curable. Asthma cough responds to normal asthma medications such as bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroids. Bronchodilators are very effective medicines to counter this cough, because it helps to loosen up the muscles around the bronchial tubes. Those muscles block the air passage and make it almost impossible for the movement of air. Relaxing these muscles can soothe the spasms and eventually the asthma cough.

Asthma cough also listens to natural remedies such as black or green tea, which contain theophyline and caffeine; known treatments for asthma. Other than that, honey would also help by soothing dry irritated throat.

There are a number of asthma triggers which we've explored more in depth in previous articles on this website with cold air, pollens and cigarette smoke just to name three. If you have a chronic, persistent cough, particularly at night, please don't ignore the symptoms and seek medical advice.

Asthma can strike at any age. In the United States over 5 per cent of the population live with asthma attack symptom. Often a family history of allergies can be identified but in the main, asthma is a mystery. Just why it affects different people is still to be determined.

Asthma attack symptom can be brought on by stress. This is particularly so after a hard, stressful day at work. There are a host of symptoms associated with asthma. It goes without saying that if you are feeling any kind of stress, take action.

Asthma attack symptom manifests in many ways such as, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, uncontrollable cough are some.

How do you tell if your asthma attack symptom is getting worse? Here are a few instances in which doctor assistance is needed:

- Your asthma medications do not relieve the symptoms.
- If your finger nails turn blue or grey color.
- In case you have trouble walking or talking.
- You have extreme difficulty breathing.
- Your nostrils flare when you breathe.
- Your neck, chest and ribs get pulled in with each breath.
- Your peak flow keeps dropping after treatment.

There are many types of medicines that control and suppress asthma attack symptom. Some asthma medicines are taken with a metered dose inhaler as this is the quickest, most effective way to administer medicines to asthma patients.

Here are some basic steps in how to use an inhaler:

Remove the cap and hold the inhaler upright.
Shake the canister well.
Tilt your neck and breathe out.
Put the inhaler one or two inches away from your mouth. When using a spacer (spacer is the tube that one attaches to the inhaler it helps a great deal to inhale) put the end of your mouth and seal your lips around it.
Press down on the inhaler to release the medications slowly breathing in for 3-5 seconds at a time.
Hold your breath for about 10 seconds to give time for the medicine to get to your lungs.
Repeat the above cycle for as many times as your doctor suggests giving at least 1 minute time between cycles.

Asthma Triggers

So what triggers an asthma attack? Asthma attack symptom can be triggered by such things as pollen, cold air, animal hair, perfumes and respiratory infection. These are just a few and in most cases, they are not easy to avoid.Your physician will be able to advise the best way to avoid asthma attack symptom.

Asthma attack symptom can vary in severity. It's categorised as mild, moderate and severe. In severe cases, daily symptoms are routine while in mild and moderate cases, asthma attack symptom would occur one or two times a week.

Asthma can be defined as a chronic condition which affects millions of people, young and old, around the world. There has been extra focus on asthma in recent years of it's increased prevalence and climbing mortality rate. It's symptoms include trouble breathing, wheezing, tightness around the chest, chest pain and coughing. In the United States alone, more than 17million people have asthma.

Controlling it effectively is the key to enjoying a good quality of life. Obviously, avoiding pollen laden areas during particular seasons would be helpful but with controlled medication and inhalers, people are managing their lives much better and learning to live with asthma.

This Disease Is Controllable

When you have asthma, you have to take medication for it which will help to open up your air passages and relieve the problems of not breathing. If the problems or symptoms still don’t go away, you have to make sure you go get help with the problem. The best way to make sure you get help is to see a doctor or medical professional as soon as possible.

You can’t just ignore the symptoms of this disease or it can really creep up on you. You will find yourself coughing a lot when you exercise or even when you are resting after exercise. If this happens, you need to take your asthma medication right away. This prevents any attack from becoming dangerous and will control your breathing effectively so that you can continue on with your activity.

Most people with this disease have a shortness of breath that is characterized; when they breathe, a wheezing sound can be heard and it is a sign you have this disease. Many people even complain of tightness in their chest when they are having an attack or episode. Any symptom related to the lungs is usually common with asthma sufferers, so ensure that you are taking care to properly monitor these symptoms and record what you discover. Any evidence or information is helpful when you are combating asthma symptoms.

Don’t Allow Yourself to Be Miserable

It is miserable to live this way. Anyone who has this disease will tell you that. People feel like their lives are limited when they are dealing with the symptoms but if it is controlled, it is easier to deal with. Make sure to watch your children and those you love for symptoms of this disease. Monitoring asthma symptoms after it is diagnosed is a big part of asthma management.

As far as treatments are concerned, alternative medicine for asthma has surfaced as recently. While it has caused great debate, many people have reported favorably after trying certain herbal treatments, relaxation methods and chiropractic treatment. It's not recommended if you have asthma that you "dive" straight in and experiment with these alternative methods. Get proper medical advice first.

Alleviating the symptoms of asthma is effectively performed today by a variety of medical prescriptions and inhalers. What about alternative medicine for asthma? Treatments involving herbal remedies, relaxation therapies and chiropractic care have been getting special attention recently as alternative medicine for asthma.

While there is sufficient safety data to support these alternative options, there is still concerns relating to their overall safety particularly in the area of herbal use. Alternative medicine for asthma has provoked lots of debate amongst professionals since first being mooted.

New Asthma Medicine Breakthroughs

There are “over the counter” herbal remedies now available for allergy sufferers. Doctors have done studies and have found herbal blends that combine anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and antibacterial results. Astragalus root, Matricaria recutita, and Phosphorus are a few of the herbs being used for this purpose.

Why Go Natural?

The major benefit of taking a natural herbal remedy, as opposed to the prescription remedy, is the absence of side effects. Side effects are a part of almost any synthetic drug and asthma medications are no exception. Using an alternative medicine for asthma, such as an herbal remedy, will largely eliminate the side effects because the medicine will come in a natural, easily digested form.

Another benefit is the cost to the patient. The overall cost of the natural herbal remedy will be much less than the typical prescribed medication. A month’s worth of a natural remedy can cost you as little as twenty-five dollars for a months supply while the prescription drugs can cost hundreds of dollars.

Chiropractic?

In the United States alone, there are over 60,000 chiropractors. Continued reports continue to suggest that chiropractic care is beneficial for a variety of conditions including asthma. Whether it's a legitimate alternative medicine for asthma is still being debated.

Why not?

As with all good things, there is a bad side as well. When you are trying to find an alternative medicine for asthma it can be very difficult to find solid proof, outside of paying the money and trying it for yourself that the product does what it says it will do. There are a lot of companies that make products that don’t really work that well.

The prescription drugs have all been extensively tested and meet certain criteria. Another reason is the cost. While the alternative medicine for asthma may be cheaper, it will not be covered by insurance which means that if you have good health insurance, you will pay less out of your pocket for a prescription.

The obvious reason why people turn to alternative forms of treatment is because of dissatisfaction with conventional methods. In some cases, this is always worth looking at. An alternative medicine for asthma is still in the "dream" basket but continued testing means we are getting closer to finding one. If you are considering trying out a new remedy, don't just jump in without the proper advice. That advice is most likely to come from your physician.

China has long used acupuncture successfully for treatment of many conditions. Now, acupuncture for asthma treatment is proving to be an effective treatment for respiratory diseases. In fact, acupuncture as an aid for respiratory ailments could even be a safer alternative than prolonged drug use.

Acupuncture and asthma is an interesting "marriage. With energy flowing through people in opposing forces it's determined that diseases are caused by an imbalane between these negative and positive forces. Acupuncture for asthma treatment research has shown benefits for asthma sufferers during the last fifteen years.

Acupuncture Can Treat Symptoms

In 1979, the World Health Organization listed 40 diseases that acupuncture is effective in treating. Acupuncture for asthma and bronchitis was on that list. The University Hospital of Vienna did a study that showed that 70% of patients with asthma reported significant improvement in their symptoms after 10 weeks of acupuncture treatments. Scientists at a Chinese hospital conducted a study that reported an immediate effective rate of 98.9% after patients received acupuncture for asthma symptoms. The rate of remission also dropped significantly and there was improvement in 76.5% of patients.

Acupuncture Can Reduce Dependency on Drugs

As studies have shown, acupuncture for asthma patients has shown benefits. Also, these patients were able to reduce their dosage of asthma medication. It is not advisable to quit any medication cold turkey, and your doctor should be consulted if you want to make any changes to your medication. However, some asthma medications have undesirable short- and long-term effects. Finding a safe alternative to high dosage medications can be beneficial to your health and wallet.

Acupuncture Is Regulated

In 1996, the Federal Drug Administration determined through several studies that acupuncture needles were no longer “investigational medical devices” and were approved for use by “qualified practitioners.” Each state has its own set of laws to regulate acupuncture and set up standards for qualified practitioners.

In California, acupuncturists must graduate from an approved school, complete four years of academic education in the field, and pass a licensing examine. If you are seeking a qualified practitioner to perform acupuncture for asthma symptoms, be sure to do your homework and find out if the person is licensed by a state agency.

So is there a place for acupuncture in asthma treatment? Following continual research over the last decade it does seem clear that acupuncture has an effect on the physiologic process of an asthma attack. Acupuncture for asthma is also deemed safe practice if performed by a licensed practitioner. If you are not getting the relief from traditional methods then acupuncture for asthma might be something you should seriously consider.
